Meditation is the Way to Enter Within Yourself
If we seek God outside ourselves through sermons, ceremonies and rituals we are using our senses and our rational mind, or intellect, and these faculties are not refined enough to experience God and Christ. Only the faculties of the soul are capable of experiencing God. Saint Augustine found the Divine within himself and declared: "I have been looking for God all over, everywhere. And finally I found that He was inside, within me, and I had been outside."
Sermons, ceremonies and rituals are inspiring and uplifting, and are necessary in our initial search for God and Christ, but we ultimately have to go within in meditation, and through the faculties of the soul we become more aware of the qualities of the Self (our true, indestructible, everlasting identity as the soul). From this awareness comes expansion of consciousness and we come to know that we are far greater than a limited body and mind. We also discover the nature of God and Christ, for the Self, or eternal soul, is made in the image of God.
